CAMPBELL FLOOD PROTECTION
If your home is within the areas likely to flood, the following action is recommended:
BEFORE THE FLOOD:
A. Plug all basement plumbing fixtures including floor drains, shower drains and toilets below flood level. Excessive flows will quickly exceed the capacity of the sanitary sewer system and will cause basement backups. We want to keep the flood out of the sewer and the sewage in.
B. Disconnect all electrical service to areas that will flood.
C. In many cases you will be better off to allow a basement to flood rather than trying to pump to keep it dry. Basement walls are not normally flood proof and will collapse under pressure. If you decide to use a sump pump, discharge in a location that will not affect your neighbors.
D. Remove paints, oil, gas and any other hazardous materials from your home and yard. Fuel oil tanks should be filled.
E. Protect your private well. It is very important to prevent floodwaters from entering the well.
F. If you plan to evacuate, please email campbellwi@townofcampbellwi.gov and let us know where you can be reached. If you do not have access to email, please call the Town Hall at 608-783-0050. Confirm that you have plugged drains and protected your well.
A. DO NOT pump out your basement until water levels have receded enough to relieve the pressure on your basement walls. Once flood levels have receded each individual is responsible for pumping their basement down to less than one foot depth, discharging externally. Once this level is reached, remove the plug and let the remainder drain by gravity.
